MEN’S SHED

We are still alive and well even though many of us need medication to keep us ticking over. The shed is open on Tuesdays between 10 and 12 and is located at Pat Carrr’s place in Knockraheen (A98AH02). Our agenda is wide and varied – a bit like ‘whatever you’re having yourself’. Mostly though, the shed is about listening and caring and sharing.

Our activities have included fiddle playing, gardening, wood carving, recitations, singing, story- telling and there is a mine of information among the members about the ageing process.

We have made bird boxes and Gooseander boxes. The Gooseander is an endangered species of duck found in Glendalough. One of our major projects was working on the planting of native Irish trees and helping to create the educational ogham trail along part of the Vartry trail. So we have been doing our bit in the biodiversity area and will continue to do so. Recently we have been trying our hand at Archery under the tuition of John. None of the members was willing to have the apple placed on the head for target purposes. We were certainly, in a quiver over this. For health and safety reasons we felt it safer to start with a turnip or a head of cabbage. Our meetings begin with some gentle exercises for those so inclined. But the tea and chat with cake and biscuits is an integral part of what we are all about.

So do drop by on Tuesdays between 10 and 12at Pat Carrr’s place in Knockraheen (A98AH02). You will be most welcome.

ROUNDWOOD FESTIVAL 2023

As the dust settles on the Roundwood Festival 2023 a big shout out to all the Roundwood Festival committee for pulling it together and ensuring that this annual event stays on our social calendar. The Street Festival was a most enjoyable day with sincere thanks to An Tochar GAA Club for the use of their facilities which proved an excellent location. These events cannot happen without the support of all the wonderful volunteers who help prepare for the festival events the days before the festival, the day of the festival and most importantly, after the event. A huge thank you to all the people who forfeited their enjoyment of the day to volunteer as stewards or help on the various stands and attractions for many long hours on Festival Day. The many craft stalls added great colour and interest to the day. What super talented people we have living in the midst, especially the young crafters. The ball race and the raffle raises a large amount of the funding towards the festival so a sincere thanks to the businesses who generously donated the various prizes and also thanks to those businesses that gave financial donations towards the running costs.

Most importantly thanks to the communities of Roundwood, Moneystown, Laragh and beyond who came out in their droves to support, spectate and take part in the various events, raffles, races, nappy hanging, tug of war and more.
