Roundwood & District News – 2nd of October 2023

MUSIC IN CALARY

Calary Church is delighted to once again host a Concert in aid of the work done by Sister Mary Killeen in Mukuru, Nairobi. This has always been a fantastic night and raises very important funding for the street children in Mukuru. This year, the music will be provided by Fionn O hAlmhain (bass and traditional musician) along with Luke Lally Maguire (piano) and Mossie Nolan (bouzouki) who will play and sing Lieder, Arias and traditional music. CREATIVE HUB

The Roundwood Creative Hub is a new crafter’s retail space in the Roundwood Parish Hall taking place on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. October dates: 1st and 15th from 11 am until 4 pm. LOTTO

Results of the lotto draw held on Sunday 1st October. There was no jackpot winner, the numbers drawn were 7, 19, 20 & 25. There were eight match three winners. Mary Power, Jamie Ferguson, Suzanne Dunleavy, Frank Dunleavy, John & Jennie, No name, Noeleen Cleary and Kathleen Martin. Next week’s jackpot will be €12,400.

BRIDGE LESSONS 

The Contract Bridge Association of Ireland has embarked on a Bridge Lessons Initiative nationally, to get more new people playing Bridge and join Bridge clubs. Here in Wicklow, our own Rory Egan of Grand Master Bridge, a past resident of Roundwood and now currently living in Rathdrum, has agreed to do a course for Absolute Beginners in Roundwood Parish Hall every Monday morning starting on the 9th of October.

They are inviting anyone from Wicklow who is interested in cards, fun and great company, to consider taking up this great game of Bridge. To this point, Rory will be starting an introduction to Bridge course for absolute beginners on Monday Mornings in Roundwood: Said Rory “This is a 10-week course suitable for people who wish to take up Bridge. We will take people through a step-by-step introduction to the great game of Bridge. A full set of notes will be provided after each lesson, why not spread the word to relatives and friends to let them know what a great game this is? ANNAMOE BOWLS

Indoor bowls is back in the Annamoe Centre on Tuesday nights at 8pm all are welcome if you were with us before welcome back and if it’s your first time welcome. We will show you how to play and have a fun night.

100TH BIRTHDAY 

Adolf Bader of Annamoe celebrated his 100th birthday on September 4th and he would like to thank everyone for the many good wishes, cards and gifts he received to celebrate his day.

MEN’S SHED

Roundwood Men’s Shed: The shed is open on Tuesdays between 10 and 12 and is located at Pat Carr’s place in Knockraheen (A98AH02). Our agenda is wide and varied – a bit like ‘whatever you’re having yourself’. Mostly though, the shed is about listening and caring and sharing. Our meetings begin with some gentle exercises for those so inclined. But the tea and chat with cake and biscuits is an integral part of what we are all about.

MOBILE LIBRARY  

Wicklow County Council Mobile Library will be in Roundwood Village on Thursday 5th of October from 10am until 11.15am and also from 2.10pm until 4.30pm. Come along and join the library. It’s a free service and is a fantastic way to pick up any book that suits your reading interests.

45 CARD GAME

45 Card Game every Tuesday night in Moneystown Community Centre starting at 8pm. Teas served.  All are welcome.

VARIETY GROUP AGM

The Roundwood Variety Group AGM will be held in Room 1 of the Parish Hall in Roundwood at 19:30 on Tuesday the 26th of September. All are welcome to come along to find out more about our group and/or join the committee. The group would be delighted to see some new faces.

The prestigious Cassiopeia Winds Quintet will perform a concert at 8 pm on Thursday 14th September in Calary Church (A98 H766) playing pieces by Claude Arrieu, Maurice Ravel, Jean Francaix, Francis Poulenc and Jean-Michel Damase.

Tickets for the concert are €18 and €15 for concessions and may be purchased by cash or cheque at the door or direct to the Music in Calary bank account. To book tickets for the concert or for more information, email derekneilson11@gmail.com or ring (01) 2818118.

CULTURE NIGHT AT CALARY 

There will be a special evening of music for you on Culture Night in Calary Church (A98 H766) on Friday 22 September starting at 8 pm when the international soprano and Greystones resident, Catherine Redding, will sing accompanied by Rachel Factor on the harpsichord.

As this is part of Culture Night, there will be no charge and there is no need to book, just come along and enjoy the fantastic singing and playing. Music in Calary would like to thank Wicklow County Council’s Arts Office for their support for this concert.

BRIDGE 

Roundwood Diamond Bridge Club will be restarting on Monday nights at 19:30 in the Community Hall. There will also be a session on Friday mornings, starting at 09:45. New members are welcome to both sessions. Further information, if required text: Seamus Kennedy at 087-2452903.

Running monthly to begin there’s a wide variety of different crafts and products on offer. With free entry and free parking, it makes an ideal Sunday outing

Roundwood Ukulele Players will resume strumming and singing in Roundwood Parish Hall. The ukulele class is for Adult Beginners and is open to everyone and anyone, but mostly to those who would love to sing and learn a new instrument but have never taken the plunge before!
