Roundwood Notes – 9th of May 2022

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

FThe Roundwood and District Historical and Folklore Society have been invited to Wicklow Library and Archives for a private visit on Tuesday 17 May 7pm promptly. Punctuality essential, so please leave plenty of time for parking.

Finally, we get the chance to see the new Library and Archive facilities in Wicklow Town, our earlier visit being cancelled by Covid. As a  bonus attendees with receive a private viewing of the 1921 Treaty exhibition organised by the National Archives. 

The new Library and Archive is on the corner of the Mall and Salt House Lane. 

LOTTO

Results of lotto draw held on Sunday 8th May. There was no jackpot winner the numbers drawn were 4,5,8,& 26. There were four match three winners, Breda O’Sullivan, Philip Mcdonald, T. S. B Cowman and Esther Byrne. Nxt week’s jackpot will be €16,300.

SCHOOL CENTENARY 

St Laurence O’Toole’s National School will be celebrating its Centenary in 2023. This is a wonderful milestone and a great opportunity for both the school and the whole community to celebrate the rich history and development of our national school and also, celebrate our current school and all the pupils, teachers, staff and families who are involved with it.A preliminary meeting has been held between the Roundwood Historical Society and interested staff members in the school to begin to make plans for how we will celebrate the Centenary. Over the coming year, we will be gathering ideas, memorabilia, stories, pictures, documents etc and working towards a wonderful celebration of our school. We are reaching out to members of the community who may be interested in helping out as we make preparations for the Centenary, or who may have artefacts, stories or just enthusiasm for the event to please make contact with us.

NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY WEEK 

National Biodiversity Week – Friday 13th to Sunday 22nd May. All events take place in the Wicklow Mountains National Park. To book any of these events email wickloweducationcentre@housing.gov.ie

Dawn Chorus walks: Sunday 15th & Wednesday 18th at 4.30am.Learn to identify some of our birds by their song in Glendalough. Free, but booking essential.

Wildflower ramble:Thursday 19th at 11am.Discover our spring wildflowers and their associated folklore. Free, but booking essential.

Bumblebee Identification Walk: Friday 20th.Find out more about these fascinating insects on World Bee Day. Free, but booking essential.

Conservation Hike: Sunday 22nd at 10am.Take a hike with a National Park guide discussing conservation issues. Free, but booking essential. To book any of these events email wickloweducationcentre@housing.gov.ie 

Family Biodiversity Treasure Hunt, daily 14th to 22nd..Free and available from the National Park Information Office, Upper Lake, Glendalough (open 10am to 5.30pm). No booking required.

BINGO 

Active Retirement Bingo will take place on Sunday 22nd May at 3 pm in Annamoe Community Hall. Everyone is welcome. 

JENNY’S PRE-SCHOOL 

Jenny’s pre -school Moneystown has a limited number of places left for September 2022 and are now taking enrolments for 2023. Enquiries to jennyspreschoolmoneystown@gmail.com 

HELP FOR UKRAINE 

Are you interested in hosting a refugee for a few weeks or a few months? Or is there any other way you feel you could help a refugee when they arrive? We are trying to develop a local network in the Roundwood district. A welcoming face is always appreciated. SET DANCING  

Roundwood set dancing has resumed on Thursday nights in the parish hall starting at 9pm.  We look forward to welcoming back our usual dancers and also any new comers if they would like to join us, are always welcome. Admission €5.
 

TEXT ALERT SERVICE  

Following on the recent spate of robberies in the area it’s a good time to remind people of the presence of the Roundwood & District Text Alert Service. This service has been in operation since 2014 and has proven to be of great benefit. The Gardaí send out short text alerts regarding issues of importance to the community such as suspicious activities, break-ins, events likely to impact on the community, etc. 

A contribution of €10.00 is requested on joining the scheme. This covers the cost of the texts and running the scheme. It is very easy to join. Pick up a form in Roundwood Parish Hall or download it here http://www.roundwood.ie/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/TA-Sign-Up-Form.pdf. Fill in your details and pop it into the Roundwood Lotto Box above the ATM machine in Centra Roundwood. If you have changed your phone number since you signed up to the text alert service please email your name and new telephone number to info@roundwood.ie so that your details can be updated. 45 CARD GAME 

45 Card Game every Tuesday night in Moneystown Community Centre starting at 8pm. Teas served.  All are welcome.   

MOBILE LIBRARY 

Wicklow County Council Mobile Library will be in Roundwood Village on Thursday 19th May from 10am until 11.15am and also from 2.10pm until 4.30pm. Come along and join the library. It’s a free service and is a fantastic way to pick up any book that suits your reading interests. 
 

CANCER SUPPORT 

Our centre is now open. Hospital transport is being provided as per usual. Counselling for cancer sufferers and their family is available. Reflexology, massage and other therapies are available also.
