Roundwood Notes 08.08.2017

Moneystown community centre would like to thank everyone who came to our barn dance and made it such a successful night.

NEW MASS TIMES
Parish of St. Laurence O’Toole – Week-end change of Mass times.  Starting  on Saturday 2nd September Mass times will be as follows – Roundwood : 6 pm,  Laragh: 7 pm and Rathdrum: 8 pm and from Sunday 3rd  September Mass times will be as follows – Laragh: 10.30 am, Clara Vale: 9.00 am, Greenane: 10.15 am, Rathdrum:11.30 am,  Moneystown: 10am & Roundwood 11.30.

ANNAMOE CENTRE
 Our annual barbeque will take place at 1 pm on 26th August. Last year’s event was really successful and we expect it to be equally as good this year, so make sure to join us! You can sample the various activities that take place in the centre while you are enjoying the food. Tickets are available in advance from the committee or you can just come along on the day. Cost on the day is €10 euro per adult or €25 Euro for family of 2, 3, or 4  children under 12.  Contact Christine on 086 8057431 Or any member of the committee.  Bowls Play takes place from 8 pm on Tuesday nights. New members are welcome. Tennis The tennis court is available for hire – why not enjoy your birthday parties, etc. there? CAR BOOT
The Car boot sale at Roundwood Parish Hall takes place on the second Sunday of every month. Set up is at 10, begins at 12. Booking is essential, indoor stalls available. For queries or to book contact Ben on 087 962 7527

ROUNDWOOD A.F.C. A.G.M.
Roundwood AFC are having their AGM on Tuesday 22nd August in our clubhouse , vartry grounds @ 8pm. All motions and nominations to be sent to the Club Secretary – Ciaran Dunne, Djouce Meadow, Roundwood in writing prior to the AGM. All new members very welcome

NATURE WALKS
Book a personal nature walk for yourself and your friends. You choose the theme, the date and the time (Monday to Friday in July and August subject to staff availability). Possible themes include birds, wildflowers, trees, mammals, butterfly and bug recording, geology and mining, responsible dog walking and a general nature walk (or you may have ideas of your own). The walks are suitable for adults and teenagers only and the maximum group size is 10 people. Please do not bring your dog, unless you are booked for ‘responsible dog walking’. Booking is essential; please phone 0404-45656 (Monday to Friday). These walks are free of charge but you may have to pay for car parking.

NATURE EXPLORERS
N
ature Explorers is an outdoor programme organised by the Wicklow Mountains National Park Guides aimed at children aged 5 to 11 years. Each week the focus is on a different aspect of the natural world such as bugs, flowers, badgers and birds. The sessions continue every Wednesday until 23rd August (2 to 4 pm), starting from the Upper Lake car park. Most activities will take place off track, so please dress accordingly. No dogs are allowed. Note that an adult must stay with the children, and be prepared to help! Booking is essential and will be taken from 9 am one week prior to each session on 0404-45656 (Monday to Friday).This activity is free but you may have to pay for car parking.

FERN ID WALK
Have you ever wondered what fern that is? If so, join the Wicklow Mountains National Park Guides at 11am on Sunday 13th August as they investigate the ferns of Glendalough. The day starts with a short slide show in the National Park Education Centre, followed by an ID walk. This event is suitable for adults and teenagers only. Please do not bring your dog. This is a free event but you may have to pay for car parking. Booking is essential and will be taken on 0404-45425 from 30th July.

PURE MILE
A meeting for residents, landowners and anyone interested in the Pure Mile will take place in Roundwood Parish Hall on Monday the 14th of August at 7.30pm.

BAT WALK AND TALK
This evening starts at 7.30pm on 17th August with a talk about bats at the Wicklow Mountains National Park Education Centre on the Miner’s Road in Glendalough. Please come early if you want to get a seat as this event can be very popular. At dusk (8.30 pm), the group will head over to the Information Office to watch the bats emerge from their roost before taking a stroll through the woods with bat detectors. Please bring a torch and insect repellent (the midges can be bad). Visitors of all ages are welcome to attend either event, or both. . This is a free event but you may have to pay for car parking. BAT WALK
A bat walk will take place on Friday 18th of August on the Baltynanima Pure Mile. Please meet at the Wicklow Way junction on the Lough Dan Road at Lake Park at 8:30pm. Please bring a torch. All welcome

MENS SHED
Roundwood Men’s Shed: Our activities continue every Tuesday from 10 onwards and age, class, colour or creed will never be an issue regarding joining the group. ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’ would be an apt motto for our SHED and the hundreds of other SHEDS throughout the country. Whatever about some of the aching ailing bodies, the storytelling, the problem solving and the near thousand years of life’s experience around the table certainly enriches the mind. PATTERN DAY WALK
The annual Pattern Day Walk from Moneystown Community Centre to Lady’s Well Ballymanus Upper on Carrick Mountain will take place on Sunday 13th August, leaving Moneystown at 6 pm.  The route is five and a half miles in total (good walking shoes recommended and no dogs allowed!).  Suitable for older children accompanied by adults.  The route is along the road and then on Coillte roads.  Lady’s well is an ancient holy well that is marked on the Neville Maps of 1760 as an important site.  The well was rediscovered in 2013 and there has been a walk every year on or close to the original pattern day – August 15th.  There will be a short talk on the history and traditions of the holy wells and also relevant local history.  If you want to play music, read a poem or sing a song feel free to join in as singing, dancing etc were all part of the traditions of pattern days and visits to the well.  Refreshments after the walk in Moneystown Community Centre.  Any queries please contact Rosaleen at rosaleendurkin8@gmail.com. DAY TRIPS
A day trip to Johnston Castle and Wexford town will take place on the 26th August which includes scones, tea and dinner.  Leaving Roundwood Parish Hall at 9a.m.  Cost is €70 per person.  All monies to be in before 1st August.  For further information please contact Susan on 087 6273032.

LOTTO
There was no jackpot winner in last weeks draw.  The numbers drawn were:- 11, 23, 25 & 29.  There were three match three winners, Mary & Morgan, A & L O’Sullivan & Noelle Duff. Next weeks jackpot will be €13,000.

WHIST RESULTS
The results of the whist are as follows:- Top Score: Martin Byrne; Top Gent: Anne Gaffney; Second Gent: Richie Cullen; Top Lady: Mary Cullen; Second Lady: Kitty Kennedy; First Half: Molly Byrne; Second Half: Jimmy Molloy; Longest Sitting: Anne Pierce and Lowest Score: Tom McHugh.  Raffle prizes were won by: Tom McHugh, Anne Gaffney, Anne Pierce & Martin Byrne.  The next whist will be on tonight Wednesday the 16th August in the Parish Centre.

MONEYSTOWN DANCE
Our August dance is on Friday 11th and our September dance will be held on the 8th September.

ROUNDWOOD DANCE
The next dance in Roundwood Parish Centre will be on Friday 18th August with dancing by Tony Davitt. All are welcome.

AN TÓCHAR GAA
As part of her “Strictly” fundraising Jess Scott is hosting an Under 30 versus Over 30 Ladies Challenge Match followed by a BBQ on Saturday 12th August, throw in 6.30 pm followed by a BBQ. Bring your family, friends, cheering voice and Appetite! A 45 Card Game takes place every Tuesday night in Moneystown Community Centre starting at a new time of 8.30pm. Teas served. All are welcome.

SET DANCING
Roundwood Set Dancing continues every Thursday night from 9pm til 11pm in Kavanagh’s Lounge, Roundwood.  Music this month with The O’Kane family. Admission remains at €5.  Beginners are always welcome along with anyone looking for a bit of exercise and a fun night out.

HOME PRODUCERS MARKET
Roundwood Home Producers Market is open every Sunday from 12 noon until 5 pm in The Parish Centre. Come for all your fresh bread, home baking, jams etc.  There will also be pictures, home crafts, plants and more. We look forward to seeing you all. New members always welcome

2017 ROUNDWOOD STREET FESTIVAL
The 2017 Roundwood Festival will take place from Wednesday, 2nd August to Sunday 6th August with plenty of activities of interest for young and old alike.  Copies of the Festival programme are available at the Parish Hall, Terry Kavanagh’s Butchers and in the noticeboard at Centra.   The programme is also available on the Roundwood.ie website and facebook pages.

CONCERT AT ST LAURENCE O’TOOLE CHURCH
As part of Roundwood Festival 2017, a concert will take place in St Laurence O’Toole Church on Friday, 4th August at7:30pm featuring Classic Harmony (from Ashford) Joe McKenna & Friends, Gráinne Medlycott, and Bryony & Ciara Conalty.  The Roundwood & District Historical Society will present a brief history of the church.  Tickets are now on sale in Terry Kavanagh’s Butchers, Post Office and Parish Office (at Parish Hall).  Adult tickets will be €10 with free entry to children (children must be accompanied). Please join us for a unique event in a wonderful location. Light refreshments will be provided after the concert in Roundwood Parish Hall.

MUSIC IN CALARY
We welcome Duo Chagall (Arun Rao, cello and Gillian Williams, violin) together with Lance Coburn, piano, to Calary Church at 8 pm on Friday 4th August. They will perform Schumann’s Piano trio in G Minor, Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello and Brahms’ Piano Trio in B . The next concert in Calary takes place at 8 pm on Friday Aug 11th when The Watterton Piano Trio, which consists of Simon Watterton, (piano), Anna Cashell, (violin) and Aoife Nic Athlaoich (cello), will perform Beethoven’s Archduke Trio and Caesar Franck’s Violin Sonata together with pieces by Debussy, Saint Saens and De Falla.  Tickets, which are €18 and €15 for concessions for each of these concerts, can be booked by ringing John at (01) 2818146 or emailing derekneilson@eircom.net.
