MEN’S SHED
The SHED has been a hive of activity recently and maximum use was made of the dry spell to prepare the raised beds for planting. Our seaside readers may say that we are a bit slow off the mark but it must be remembered that we live on high ground. Our noble landlord has planted the spuds and it is somewhat ironic that following the recent visit of the English gentleman to the SHED, Pat saw fit to plant British Queens and King Edwards. It has been suggested that we mark out a ‘republican plot’ and plant a few Aran Banners.(For younger readers, these are varieties of spuds.)  Our young local Councillor is always on hand to help but he was happy to give credit to the ‘other crowd’ for the load of farmyard manure. You can use your own imagination here because the words used cannot be printed.  Again we extend a sincere invitation to come along to the SHED on Tuesdays between 10 and 12 but now that the gardening has commenced the SHED will be in operation on other days as well. For any information feel free to call 086 8650588 anytime.

ROUNDWOOD & DISTRICT HISTORICAL & FOLKLORE SOCIETY
Our next talk in the 2017 Series will take place on Tuesday, May 9th at 20.00 in the Roundwood Parish Hall.  The talk is entitled ‘The Fenians in Context’ and will be presented by Author and Historian, Liz Gillis.  Liz Gillis has a degree in Irish history and is the author of five books on the Irish Revolution.   Formerly a curatorial assistant with RTÉ, Liz has worked as a curator on numerous publications and has participated in many conferences and lectures on the subject of the Irish Revolution. Born in the Liberties in Dublin, Liz also conducts a walking tour of the Liberties, concentrating on the revolutionary history of the area. She is also co-organiser of the annual conference on the Burning of the Custom House in 1921.  The word ‘Fenian’ conjures up powerful images in Irish history; of dynamite plots, clandestine meetings of secret cells plotting revolution in Ireland from both sides of the Atlantic. Bishop Moriarty of Kerry famously declared that ‘hell was not hot enough’ for the Fenians.  As 2017 is the 150th anniversary of the Fenian Rising of 1867 this talk will be of great interest and we look forward to welcoming you on Tuesday 9th May.  Members and non-members are welcome to attend.
